Hello World 👋
In this episode, we (
and ) dive into the age-old creator dilemma: should you be consistent, or should you prioritise quality? We chat about:
Why Bhav’s podcast died a slow, perfectionist death
Becky's 3-year Substack streak and now she’s in too deep to stop
How to set the bar stupidly low
Sometimes, stopping a creative project isn’t failing, it’s finishing a season
If you’ve ever felt stuck between pumping out content and holding out for “banger” quality, this episode is for you.
Our creator checkpoints
Before we dive in, we wanted to check in on where we’re each at:
Bhav is two weeks into “funemployment” and is finding doing nothing is surprisingly hard, mainly because of the guilt. She has now reframed May as a do-nothing month, with one goal: to feel rested.
Becky is riding a wave of creative energy. She’s in the thick of rewriting her book, Bite-Sized Creativity, after getting back notes from her editor. She’s also soft-launching a new Substack essay series called Cheat on Your Job, aimed at side hustlers navigating creative ambitions around a 9-to-5.
On staying consistent
Onto the consistency topic: how to define it, how to stick with it, and why the bar should start on the floor.
Becky’s approach is to publish weekly, even if it means cutting corners, because that public cadence helps her stay accountable. She’s now in the top 1% of consistent writers on Substack.
Bhav thrives on external accountability. She’s “consistently inconsistent” unless someone’s expecting her to show up—like this podcast. What’s been tripping her up in past projects (like her original podcast, Creators Campfire) was setting the quality bar too high.
The takeaway: lower the bar, cut corners early. If anything, put the bar on the floor.
Quantity > Quality (especially early on)
Annoyingly, quality emerges from putting in the reps, aka quantity.
Bhav regrets not shipping more podcast episodes, since reps would have led to growth.
Becky echoed that her early YouTube consistency helped her level up quickly, even though she eventually paused uploads to focus on writing.
That said, both of us have made strategic decisions to stop things—like weekly YouTube—when they no longer served us. It helps to think of the projects as seasons that can end.
Enter: Small Creator, Big World
This podcast is our live accountability pact. It’s a monthly check-in from two people trying to stay in motion without getting overwhelmed. Bhav’s goal is to reopen her creative taps after stepping down from full-time ops. Becky’s trying to not overbuild everything (too fast), while juggling her creative projects.
We’ll keep the bar low and the vibes high.
